JOMI

We realize that a peer-reviewed surgical video journal is a novel concept, so please find below some frequently asked questions:

What is JOMI?

JOMI Surgical Video Journal (jomi.com) is a peer-reviewed academic journal dedicated to publication of articles that include high-quality, long-form, expert-narrated surgical videos.

Why is JOMI different?

JOMI is the only journal in existence to heavily subsidize video production, which is expensive and complex. As a result, JOMI is the only journal to offer a large library of high-quality surgical videos.

Why publish in JOMI?

Dissemination of Knowledge: The goal of JOMI is to democratize surgical education by making it possible for expert surgeons to offer high-quality educational experiences to anyone in the world.

What are the benefits of publishing?

Be Part of the New Gold Standard. JOMI is setting the new gold standard in video-based surgical education. Institutions / physicians who publish in JOMI have the unique opportunity to become a standard for the next generation of surgeons for specific procedures or techniques.

Optimized Case Preparation. Publishing in JOMI generates great training content for residents and medical students, especially when there are cases performed by their attendings.

Ease of Publishing. Most surgeons have some experience with video production - it is difficult. JOMI will handle most work related to video production making for a relatively easy publishing process.

Knowledge Preservation / Legacy. As surgeons retire or switch institutions, knowledge is lost. JOMI helps preserve and archive knowledge.

Is JOMI a for-profit or a non-profit journal?

JOMI is a for-profit journal, similar to most other journals, including journals published by Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley-Blackwell, or Taylor & Francis.

How does JOMI make money?

JOMI’s primary sources of revenues are individual and institutional subscriptions.

Who subscribes to JOMI?

JOMI subscribers include individual medical students, surgeons, and OR staff, as well as some of the most highly-regarded medical institutes in the world, including Harvard Medical School, Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and numerous others. The full list is available at jomi.com/subscribers

Are there publication fees?

The following fees may be assessed. JOMI will reduce or waive fees entirely for content aligned with the JOMI editorial strategy.

Publication Fee / Article Processing Charge: this charge ranges from $500 to $2,000 depending on level of complexity of the publication.

Note: Publication fee will be discounted by 50% for authors from an institution that has an institutional subscription.

Filming Fee: a filming fee applies if a JOMI production team performs the filming on-site. This fee is typically $2,000 to $5,000 depending on level of complexity, number of filming days, etc. This fee may be waived depending on whether filming resources are available and if content is considered “high priority” by the JOMI editorial team.

Note: Remote training of existing staff is free of charge.

Post-Production Fee: post-production is the most difficult part of the publication process. However, to encourage publishing, JOMI will waive post-production fees for content that (a) is appropriately filmed and (b) is considered to be of moderate or high priority by the editorial team.
