      <abstract>
        <p>A foley catheter is a sterile, flexible tube that is inserted through the urethra to the urinary bladder to drain urine. A urinary catheter is needed in circumstances where there is blockage or injury in the urethra, an enlarged prostate gland in males, birth defects affecting the urinary tract, urinary bladder weakness, and kidney disease, or in cases of ureter or urinary bladder stones. It is also used to accurately measure the urine output of critically ill patients, to deliver medication directly into the urinary bladder, and to drain the urinary bladder before, during, or after surgery. Here, a foley catheter was inserted into a female patient prior to surgery in preparation for a hysterectomy.</p>
